Finishing

Danish Oil - Hardwood Artisans typically finishes our furniture with Danish oil. Danish oil is a polymerized linseed oil, or a combination of oils that have been heated up to enhance their melding together. It is similar to Tung oil, except a touch of polyurethane has been added to the mixture for durability. The net effect is a satin finish that is protective, but barely there, allowing you to feel and see the natural beauty of the wood.

Lacquer Finish* - For an additional charge and upon request, we can add a lacquered finish to your piece. Please note that the prices reflected on our website do not include a lacquer finish option. If you are interested in this type of finishing and would like to learn more about our lacquer stain samples, please contact our showroom at 1-800-842-6119 for pricing.

Light Stain - For mahogany and white oak pieces only, we add a light stain for no additional charge, which brings out the best of the wood's unique character.

Optional Stains - Over the years we have created a number of optional stains. We have tried to create colors that mirror the tones of the period. There is a lot of depth in these colors because they are actually layers of different colors, rather than just one coat of custom stain. Most of the time, we lay an aniline dye stain on as the first step. This actually dyes the wood. We then apply several layers of wiping stain, and then finish with a Danish oil top coat. This layering enhances the refraction off the piece, giving the finish a feeling of depth.

Custom Staining - We have the ability to do custom staining to try to match your existing piece. Because wood, patina, yellowing shellacs, sun bleaching, oxidation, etc. are all things we cannot duplicate, the match will not be exact. Time changes a finish. We can get very close to your finish, but will never get an exact match.

Painted/Dark Stains - Sometimes, a customer wants a cabinet that is painted. We are able to fulfill this request. We are also able to apply very dark stains, which require a lacquer top coat to seal in the color.
