  1. Shinto Benches in and Mahogany and Walnut with Custom Maple Wedges

    Shinto Bench

The Shinto bench is an Asian influenced design that has been created and recreated by dozens of companies. Co-owner Mark Gatterdam redesigned the Shinto bench to properly represent the way Hardwood Artisans believes furniture should be built: solid hardwood, no screws, no nails and lasts for generations.

This bench features the careful craftsmanship of through tenons with wedged keys. The keys are done in ebony wood as an additional accent. To top it off, a sculpted seat makes this piece a perfect balance of functional furniture and fine art.

  5. Nantucket Bench in Walnut

    Nantucket Bench

Sometimes here at Hardwood Artisans, stars align. In fact it happens so often that it now seems an out-growth of the organic nature of our creative process. Not being tied to producing a spring, summer or winter catalog as some larger companies, we can create and release a new piece based on a customer suggestion or our own fleeting inspiration. The Nantucket bench was one such customer suggestion.

Once it was built and we showed it around the office, we agreed that it looked as though it belonged in some sea-side New England town readying itself for the approaching fall. Hence, Nantucket. Only later through happy coincidence did we discover that Abiah Folger, founding father Benjamin Franklin's mother, was born on Nantucket. Her birth site is marked by a plaque and is known to locals as "The Bench". From a customer's musings to a short history lesson, sometimes life around here just feels like one fortunate accident.
