  2. Crofters Loose Seat Collection

    Crofters Loose Seat Collection

In England, a small family farm is called a "croft", and its owners or tenants are called "crofters". At Hardwood Artisans, the Crofter’s collection is built much like our Craftsman style, but the sides are open, with graceful slats instead of solid panels, making these pieces visually light and airy.

One of the main characteristics of our Crofters pieces is the strong use of vertical spindles in the sides and backs. The general look is what many people might term “mission” style. Our Crofters sofas, loveseats, and chairs are archetypes of this genre. Traditionally done in quarter-sawn white oak, these look very “updated” in cherry, walnut and mahogany. You choose or supply the fabric to really compliment your décor.

The loose seat version of our Crofter's collection has cushions that sit on top of the upholstered springs, and has a softer feel. The legs appear a little shorter on the loose seat version, but the top of the seat cushion is maintained at 18” off the floor. A traditional Arts and Crafts piece would have had a tight seat, but we are not doing reproductions; let comfort and your own sense of style be your guide.

Fabric: The price of this piece includes the cost of upholstery but does not include the cost of fabric. You can drop off or mail a fabric you found elsewhere or pick from our selection listed below.

In the Crofter tight seat version, there are no separate seat cushions as such, resulting in a little firmer feel. The legs appear a little taller on the tight seat version, but in both cases, the top of the seat cushion is 18” off the floor. A traditional Arts and Crafts piece would have had a tight seat, but we are not doing reproductions; let comfort and your own sense of style be your guide.

  5. Futons

    Futons

All futons are not created equal. With regards to futons, the trend has been to get the price to the absolute lowest number. As a result, there are a lot of poorly made items being offered on the market as "furniture". We are opposing this trend. Our frames are built as real furniture - pegged mortise and tenon joints on the arms and lock miters on the frame - no staples or dowels.

Regarding our futon mattresses, our White Lotus futon mattresses are also a cut above the usual. Rather than just use plain cotton and foam, we use natural cotton with ultracel foam (an Earth friendly and high quality foam) all sandwiched between layers of wool for a comfortable, dry, and healthy sleep. These futons are constructed by hand for us.

Each package is priced to include the frame, the futon mattress, and a cover. Choose from the SIS fabrics listed. Matching/coordinating pillows and bolsters are also available.
