About Us

When we launched our furniture company in 1976, my partner Larry Spinks and I, Greg Gloor decided to make beautiful, high-quality furniture and to have some fun along the way. I think that we have succeeded in both regards.

We are exceedingly proud of our company and its products. All of our products are produced locally by highly skilled craftspeople in Northern Virginia.

Today we make over 800 items ranging from an elegant plant stand to an elaborate, custom-installed wall system all using traditional joinery and beautiful hardwoods. Every piece is lovingly hand-finished to produce a magical item that is a pleasure to touch and own.

Should you choose to visit one of our four retail showrooms in the greater DC area, we encourage you to look around and touch the furniture. Our non-commissioned sales people are there to guide you through our vast product line and the process of creating your special piece of furniture.

You, like so many of our customers, just might be mysteriously drawn to the clean lines, sensual wood, and enduring quality of our furniture.

Our History

We started in 1976 as a simple two-man shop using only a router, Skilsaw, hand sander, and drill. Our first line of products was loft beds and platform beds constructed from birch wood.

We became successful enough to expand our operation. I believe that the honest and straight-forward nature of the Loft Bed Store was a major contributing factor.

The ensuing years were a time of rapid change as we expanded our production and retail operations and our product line. We began to use oak, birch, maple, cherry, walnut, and mahogany making new and more sophisticated products including Murphy Beds, futon furniture, wall units, and several styles of dressers and chests drawing heavily from the traditions of the early 20th century arts and crafts movement.

In 1998, we changed our name to "Hardwood Artisans” to more correctly represent who we had become as accomplished furniture builders dedicated to our craft and our customers.

In 2005, I turned over my half of the company to several key employees who had been with me for years and who have helped make the business what it is. Through the years, we have made many good friends among our customers and suppliers, and I consider this the most important thing of all.

Our Philosophy

You had a need or want; you came to us, and because you liked what you saw and heard, you ordered something from us. You trusted us to build you a piece of furniture that you would enjoy for years.

That trust is not something we take lightly.

This concern is felt by all the employees at Hardwood Artisans.
"How can we make a better product or give better service?" is a guiding principle in every facet of our organization.

We strive to give each piece a life of its own; to treat each piece as if it were being built for someone we know and like.

One of the great men of American furniture design was Gustav Stickley who, in 1910 said:

"...I felt that the badly-constructed, over-ornate, meaningless furniture that was turned out in such quantities by the factories was not only bad in itself, but that its presence in the homes of the people was an influence that led directly away from sound qualities which make an honest man and a good citizen. It seemed to me that we were getting to be a thoughtless, extravagant people, fond of show and careless of real value, and that one way to counteract this national tendency was to bring about, if possible, a different standard of what was desirable in our homes."

At Hardwood Artisans, what we do is sell and build simply beautiful furniture. But behind that objective is the potential for creating a positive effect—this is not just about how we work but about how we live.

Our Invitation

We believe that people who buy things should be in touch with the people who make things.

If you are interested in seeing how Hardwood Artisans furniture is made, please visit our shop in Woodbridge. We would love to give you, your friends, or your Boy Scout/Girl Scout troop, etc., a shop tour.

When I was a young boy in Pittsburgh, my school class and other groups would often tour local facilities such as the Heinz (pickles) plant, U.S. Steel’s foundry or the Iron City Brewery. Today, this kind of opportunity happens infrequently and I feel that something vital has been lost.

So, please consider yourself welcome to give us a call at 877/999-9663 to arrange a time for your visit with us.
